I saw this picture on the web the other day, and I realized just how much I love my country, the place I live. Lemieux Island is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. I will never leave. And either will my dogs!

Island Clean Up
Please bring a garbage bag and remove some of the existing waste and place it by the garbage near the fountain so the city can remove. If everyone that cares about this
greenspace takes a small portion out to that garbage can, it will make a
difference and reduce the burden of this nasty task.
Thanks so much!!

great news!!
At the recent meeting at the Lemieux Island WTP, Dixon Weir showed us the
fencing plans for allowing public access during the next construction
phase. As of Mother's Day, access will be allowed from 6pm until 6am every
evening. The first set of gates to the WTP located past the access to the
fountain park will be open for use of the employee parking lot. A fenced
path from the entrance of the fountain park will lead us to the greenspace
and water. The long grassed area and the greenspace between the road and
the rock wall will not be available to us.
I thanked him and told him we would keep an eye out and report any
suspicious happenings to the police. He is confident that our group would
be the best security he could ask for! I also suggested he not remove the
sign and no media release on this access as we would prefer to keep the
island to ourselves!
I am really pleased with the effort and the cost to refence the
construction area to allow us access. Dixon could have saved himself the
trouble by refusing to accommodate us. He should receive a community
spirit award! Thanks to everyone for your patience and understanding!
See you all on Mother's Day evening!

email from lorrie re: meeting
I was there about 6pm, signed in as myself and T-Bone and completed a comment form asking the City to "restore complete access between projects and after work is completed". Kerri and Scout were there and did the same thing. More people may have come after we left so hopefully they saw our comments and did the same. I also requested they try to save the walnut trees.
We then cornered Dixon Weir, the Superintendent and asked about the status of the present project. He remembered us and stated the present project was to be completed on time, end of March. He hopes to have the parking lot and fountain park open, at least, end of March prior to the next project starts! It's not complete access but its something. Apparently his wife has a dog and was inquiring when it would open again. Gotta like having internal pressure!
There will be another meeting in the spring for the building expansion,(walnut tree removal to accomodate expansion). The "sludge" project to transport sludge across the river to sewer system due this spring. That project starts this spring if the WTP is upgraded in time to handle the sludge, the upgrades have been tendered.

a little pet tale
A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.
After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like Mother of Pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold.
He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"
"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.
"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.
"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up."
The man gestured, and the gate began to open.
"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.
"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."
The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.
After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.
"Excuse me!" he called to the reader. "Do you have any water?"
"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in."
"How about my friend here?" the traveller gestured to the dog.
"There should be a bowl by the pump." They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.
The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree. "What do you call this place?" thetraveler asked.
"This is Heaven," he answered.
"Well, that's confusing," the traveller said. "The man down the road said that was Heaven, too."
"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's Hell."
"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"
"No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind."

Happy New Year!
A message from Lorrie Marlow:
Hello Everyone
You may have seen the City of Ottawa Environmental Assessment Notice in the Citizen last Saturday. There is an open house in the Filtration Gallery at the Lemieux Water Treatment Plant on February 10th from 5pm to 8pm. This is for the dumping of sludge into the Ottawa River and the proposal to redirect this sludge to a proper sewer line. It also includes the plans to expand the plant into the park. This is the consultation stage but we should make an appearance.
I plan to attend and encourage all the dog-walking community to attend just to reaffirm our interest in the island.
Hope everyone had a great winter! L.M.
On a quick look at the city website I found some info on the above meeting:
If you would like to share any pictures of your dogs on the island, please send them to ottawadogpark@hotmail.com.
